Match report: United 2-3 Yokohama Marinos

United suffered their second defeat in three games of the pre-season tour so far, after coming up short against Japanese J-League side Yokohama Marinos. The superiority of their fitness showed, as the side who are placed third in their domestic league ran out 3-2 winners courtesy of a late goal.

The game saw its first goal after just 28 seconds, some sloppy play from United gave Marqinhos a chance which David de Gea saved. Then after more sloppy work from Fabio, he got a second bite at the cherry and he wasn’t going to miss twice, giving his side the lead.

It took United a while to get into the match, and we equalised after our first decent move. Zaha skinned his fullback before firing a cross into the box, the ball fell to Jesse Lingard and he calmly finished to make it 1-1.

It wasn’t long until United were into the lead. A curling Januzaj free-kick caused havoc in the opposition penalty area, and somehow it ended up in the Yokohama goal courtesy of one of their own players.

The second half started just as the first did, Marinos equalised. This time from a corner. David de Gea committed himself but got nowhere near the ball, and Fabio was out-jumped by his opposition of the same name, giving the Japan side hope of winning the match.

Their hope was fulfilled as the game came to a close. United looked tired as the game wore on and some good work resulted in Fujita being wide open in the United box. He duly delivered and tucked the ball into the United net, inflicting a second defeat in three tour games.

Man of the Match – Adnan Januzaj

The young Belgian played in behind Robin van Persie in the no.10 role. He struggled to get on the ball early on, but as the game progressed he saw more and more possession and on the whole utilised it very well. He picked the right passes and spotted the runs of his teammates, he also isn’t afraid to run with the ball which is something we’ve often lacked.

  1. Januzaj had quite alot of misplaced passes and got outmuscled quite a lot. He was alot less influential in this game compared to his last one, in which he played amazingly well and he was okay at best in this game. Zaha deserved to get MOTM imo. He was always determined to get the ball off the opposition and on numerous occasions he did, he made some really good runs, some good key passing, got past his man a few times and set up Lingards first goal. His delivery and shooting still need work, but he’s been looking really good on this preseason tour so far and definitely deserves his place on one of the wings. Januzaj needs to build more muscle (like Kagawa did) to get more to the grips of the physicality that will definitely threaten him on the wings, if he were to get into the 1st team this season. He is still a very exciting prospect and i hope he keeps getting better and builds himself more physically. :)
