Defender could yet stay at Old Trafford as Man United up asking price: report

Manchester United fans who wanted Matteo Darmian to leave Old Trafford could have been just dealt somewhat of a blow…

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, translated excellently by Sport Witness, the Italy full-back could yet be staying in Manchester.

That’s because Edward Woodward and company have now decided they want €25m (£21.9m) to let him leave, with Juventus now considering backing out on any potential move to bring Darmian back to the Serie A.

It wasn’t that long ago when rumours surfaced suggesting the former Torino man had already agreed personal terms with the Old Lady. Now, it looks as though Juve’s attentions could have turned elsewhere, with the report suggesting a move for Joao Cancelo is now in the offing.

Honestly, this isn’t any good for all involved. United should be happy to get a below-par player off their books for a transfer fee around what they paid for him (£12m), instead, they’re trying to play hard-ball and it could backfire massively.

The person I feel most sorry for in all of those is Darmian himself. I wouldn’t be surprised if his bags were already packed and he was ready to relocate his family back to Italy. No doubt those plans have been put on hold; for now at least…
