Mourinho desperate to keep out-of-contract midfielder, Arsenal eyeing move: report

Manchester United have several superstars whose contracts are winding down at this season’s end.

Jose Mourinho and Edward Woodward will no doubt be working hard behind the scenes to work out who they want to give new deals too, while also looking at potentially letting some players walk away for free.

One man who the self-proclaimed Special One is clearly keen on keeping is Juan Mata. According to The Sun, per ESPN’s transfer rater, Mourinho is ‘desperate’ to keep the ex-Chelsea man at Old Trafford, although his job may be harder than first thought, with Unai Emery keen on bringing the attacking midfielder to North London.

The report says that ‘time is running out’ for United to agree upon a new contract with Mata, and although he has been playing much more regularly recently, he has spent far more time on the bench than he probably would have liked under Mourinho.

He’s now 30, Mata is at that stage in his career where regular football is an absolute must. With that said, I’m not sure Arsenal would mean guaranteed playing time for the Spaniard, plus. United would prefer to let him go to an overseas club. If they do allow Mata’s deal to run down, though, the club won’t have any say in his next destination…
