Manchester United Football Club took the decision to hand Jesse Lingard a new long-term contract yesterday, and that was something that did split the Old Trafford fanbase. I, for one, was delighted to see a homegrown player given such a hefty deal.
The Red Devils head North to take on Sunderland this weekend, in a game between two sides vying for victory for two completely different reasons. United need to keep their top four hopes alive, whereas our hosts are desperate to remain a Premier League club.
Ahead of the game, Mourinho met the media, and amongst the topics of discussion for the gaffer was the aforementioned new deal for Lingard. It’s fair to say that the self-proclaimed Special One is very happy with the clubs’ decision to lengthen his stay here.
“He’s English and made in the Academy – these players are very important for the club. It’s a very important contract and I congratulate him.” Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Manchester United liveblog.
At the end of the day, I’m just not sure as to why Lingard comes in for so much stick. He’s a brilliant little squad player to have in and around the team, and he can always come into the mix and do a job. On top of that, the Warrington-born-winger loves a Wembley final goal; having scored in our last three appearances there.
I’m chuffed to bits for him, and I hope this new deal gives him the freedom to focus solely on his football rather than worrying about what will happen next.
