ESPN are reporting that Manchester United have made an informal inquiry to Chelsea about the availability of 25-year old Juan Mata. It is unclear at this point whether Mata will be part of a deal taking Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge, or whether United have offered cash up front for the attacking midfielder.
Juan Mata scored an impressive 20 goals last season, and also added a remarkable 35 assists. Rooney on the other hand, scored 16 goals. The England international is also a couple of years older than the Spaniard, but you’d wonder, would Chelsea really let a player of Mata’s calibre leave for a struggling Rooney?
These rumours began to circulate when Chelsea hijacked a late deal for Willian, and with all the attacking prowess that the London club have at their disposal, someone is going to miss out. I can’t see it being Mata though.
Similarly, would United want to let Rooney go to Chelsea? As all they need is a top striker. I’d say Chelsea need Rooney more than we need Mata, so if it means Rooney rotting in the reserves for a year to give us a better chance of winning the league, thats fine by me.
