Manchester United Football Club handed a couple of debuts out at Old Trafford yesterday, with both Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic playing in Red Devils colours for the first time.
It was absolutely superb to see our new players in action, and immediately you could see the difference they have made within our starting line-up.
Lukaku scored two excellent goals that helped us on our way to victory, whereas Matic was that midfield enforcer that we’ve been craving for absolutely ages.
I’d like to focus on the latter, with the Serbia star putting in a man of the match display against a side capable of finishing in the top seven in the Premier League this term.
After the game, the 29-year-old spoke to the media about just how brilliant it was to make his debut for such a prestigious club.
“It was great [to play at Old Trafford], when you wear that [United] shirt you feel some kind of pressure because this is a big club, but that’s why we are here.” Nemanja Matic told Manchester United’s official website.
“We know that it’s a big responsibility to play for Manchester United and I’m happy that we have started well and that I hope we continue like this – I’m sure this group can do good things.”
I love him already. I thought we’d be getting a guy who just sits in front of the back four to break up play. He offers more than that. Just look at that excellent run he made for Lukaku’s opening goal, and if he didn’t burst down the channel and distract a defender, we probably don’t score that goal.
It was a fantastic start for him, but he’ll now that we have bigger fish to fry. The scary thing is that the West Ham game was his first full 90-minute match of the season, and as fitness levels grow, his performances should only get better.
