Manchester United rounded off their pre-season tour with a victory against Italian side, Sampdoria. The Red Devils won the game 2-1, with goals coming from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata. However, one player stole the show…
Nemanja Matic made his Manchester United bow, and within minutes it became absolutely clear as to why Jose Mourinho sanctioned a big-money move to bring in the 29-year-old powerhouse.
He was absolutely everywhere breaking up the play, winning the ball back for his teammates and getting United on the counter-attack. I genuinely lost count on how many occasions he fought for, and successfully got the ball back in our possession, and that’s something we’ve been crying out for.
After the match was over, Matic spoke to the media to express his joy at making his first appearance at his new club, and he genuinely seems excited to be here.
“It was nice to play in front of our supporters,” Matic said, as per the Daily Star.
“The stadium was full of Manchester United supporters and that was special for me and I’m happy to make my debut for such a big club.”
“It was strange because the team has played a good pre-season.”
“I trained alone in London and it was strange for me but I tried to give my best to control the game well to give the balance and for the first game, it was good for me.
“Step by step I’m sure I will be better and I hope that I will help the team to achieve something this season.”
He’s a typical Mourinho player. Tough, strong and tall. He’ll be a real asset for United this term, and although it isn’t an exciting signing, it was simply one that we had to make.
Matic’s debut was a great start and a glimpse at what we can expect this season. Don’t forget, he played his first minutes of pre-season football against Sampdoria, and as match fitness builds he’ll only get better. A real test for him is just around the corner – a game against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup next Tuesday. That will definitely be interesting.
