Just four days ago, the Daily Mail claimed that young Ethan Laird had been drafted into the Manchester United first-team. Rightly so, too, as the young kid continues to impress at Old Trafford.
Well, ahead of United’s all-important Premier League game against Bournemouth, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed that the talented 18-year-old starlet has been called into the first-team squad.
He’ll join the main training group now, along with other up-and-comers including Tahith Chong and Teden Mengi, both of whom are looking to make their mark.
“Ethan is going to join the training group now.” Solskjaer told ManUtd.com.
For me, Laird is up there with the biggest talents in his age group. There’s a reason why the right-footed Brandon Williams had to switch over to left-back and Laird is that reason.
The right-back has only made two senior starts for the Old Trafford club, though it’s going to be tough to usurp Aaron Wan-Bissaka from that starting job.
I do believe that Laird can overtake Diogo Dalot for that back-up role, mind. So-much-so that I wouldn’t be surprised if the Portuguese is sold this summer as Solskjaer continues his squad overhaul.
For now, though, Laird has to work hard in training, impress and wait for his chance. If there’s any pre-season at all this summer, I suspect he’ll be an integral part of that…
