Manchester United Football Club couldn’t really have asked for a better way to start the season. Jose Mourinho’s men absolutely hammered (no pun intended) West Ham United, in a convincing 4-0 victory where both Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic made their debuts.
The aforementioned duo both put in insanely good performances, as did midfielder Paul Pogba who ran the show for the most part. Then, the Frenchman put the icing on the cake with an excellent strike from outside the penalty area.
Yesterday, The Telegraph managed to grab an exclusive interview with him. Amongst the topic of conversation was the fact that nobody is talking about his price tag anymore, but what I found most interesting was the praise he handed to the aforementioned duo of Matic and Lukaku.
“It was an excellent start to the season but what matters is the end. We have started well but we have to carry on like this. Matic was a key player and Romelu scored two goals so it is what we wanted and what we expect. But it is only one game.” Pogba told The Telegraph in an excellent exclusive.
This is high praise indeed. In the case of Matic, the big Serbia international just allowed that extra freedom to the more creative players in the team; and Pogba was one of the biggest benefactors of that.
Personally, I was surprised at Matic’s all-round game. Not only does he break up the play, but he has an excellent eye for a pass and he’ll even bomb forward and get involved – as displayed perfectly during United’s first goal.
Now onto Lukaku. The Belgian beast opened his account in emphatic fashion, and on the whole, it was a wonderful day for the 24-year-old. No doubt that the confidence is now flowing, and he needs to keep up with this performance level, because he’s such an integral part of Mourinho’s new-look Manchester United team.
