Since his acrimonious move away from Old Trafford last year due to financial issues, Paul Pogba has taken every opportunity to have a sly dig at the club that helped him become the player he is today. Whilst at United Pogba won an FA Youth Cup, and made seven appearances for the club before turning a contract down.
The 20-year old left for Italy where more money beckoned, but United fans (myself included) cannot help but feel we’ve let a gem escape our grasp. Pogba played 38 times in a title-winning Juventus side last year and thoroughly impressed, he is also alongside Wilfried Zaha in the running for the European Golden Boy award.
Today Pogba has fired another low blow in United’s direction, claiming that Sir Alex Ferguson tried to keep him, but he ‘didn’t get very far’.
Pogba told Sky Italia:
“Sir Alex Ferguson tried to keep me at Manchester United, but he didn’t get very far. Were other clubs tracking me? Yes, but I only had Juve in my mind. At the time I heard from Chelsea, Arsenal and Milan, but nobody is like Juve.”
Sir Matt Busby famously said ‘don’t chase money at Manchester United, it’ll come to you’. A phrase that certainly didn’t ring true with Pogba…
