Manchester has been painted red. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have slept extremely well last night, capping off a fantastic week for the Red Devils in style.
What made victory on derby day all-the-sweeter was the fact that United definitely deserved all three points. The Old Trafford club went to Eastlands and performed brilliantly, making an excellent City team look very average at times.
Our counter-attack was just deadly throughout. Marcus Rashford will take all the plaudits because he scored the opening goal, while Anthony Martial also bagged one for himself. However, Daniel James also deserves credit. The Wales winger has been immense since making the move to Manchester – putting in some super individual performances.
Club legend Peter Schmeichel was quick to single out James for praise following his ‘unbelievable’ display in the derby for many reasons:
‘Someone who is not going to grab the headlines is Daniel James.’ Schmeichel said live on Premier League productions, transcribed by The Metro.
‘Today he was unbelievable, chasing every ball, he was in every counter-attack and, at the same time, he was doubling up with [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka on the right hand side.
‘Ryan [Giggs] must be so happy to see one of his players perform so well. He’s played every single game this season and he’s still playing well.
‘That’s a fantastic signing and he played fantastic today.’
I’m just pleased that James is still getting credit despite his lack of scoring. The work he does just cannot be understated (on both sides of the ball). It sounds daft but sometimes he’s just too quick for his own good and his speed often leads to a breakdown in counter-attacks because he’s just too far ahead.
Yesterday, though, he was always an outlet on the break, while pulling his weight on the defensive side of the ball, helping out right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
We’ve got a proper player on our hands here, and it’s worth pointing out that James is only going to get better as he’s exposed to more first-team football.
