Manchester United have won the Europa League. The Red Devils made hard work of it at times, but in the final, it was pretty much plain sailing against a talented Ajax team. Jose Mourinho got his tactics spot on, and the players executed the gameplan perfectly.
In what was a long and hard campaign, it’s nice to see several Reds getting named in the official Europa League squad of the season. Eight were included in total, which is a testament to their efforts in European competition this year.
So let’s start with the goalkeeper. Of course, Sergio Romero was going to get included. Our backup has had a stunning year, making some wonderful saves that even David de Gea would have been proud of.
There are three United defenders in total, lead by Eric bailly. The Ivorian was a breath of fresh air to watch and it was gutting to see him on the sidelines during the final. Daley Blind started in Stockholm and had an excellent match, he was named, as was Antonio Valencia, the buccaneering right-back who has been sublime from minute one.
There was also a space in the squad for three midfielders. Let us begin with the most expensive player on the planet; Paul Pogba. He has come in for a lot of stick this season but when he plays well, United tend to win and that is exactly how it went down in the final. Ander Herrera is also worthy of his place in the squad. He has been Manchester United’s heartbeat for a lot of this year. A future captain? I think so. Henrikh Mkhitaryan broke a record for scoring six goals for United in a European season, including one in the final, that’s what earned him his spot.
Finally, we have the big man, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It was a shame for him to miss the final back in his home country, but without him, we wouldn’t have made it to Stockholm. Get well soon!
