Picture: Juan Mata all-smiles after winning National Award for Sport

Everyone loves them some Juan Mata. He’s widely regarded as one of the nicest guys in football.

He never badmouths, nor moans at the referee, or dives. Instead, he just absolutely loves football, he adores his job and he wants to give back to the less fortunate amongst us.

That’s where Common Goal comes in. Mata set up the charity for professional players, urging them to give just 1% of their salary away to people who need it more. It’s fair to say that it’s picking up speed and every single week it seems as though a new name is getting themselves involved.

Today, it’s nice to see Mata rewarded. He has been named Spain’s prestigious National Award for Sport for the work he does off the field, and i couldn’t think of a more deserving winner.

United tweeted the photo earlier and it just filled me with pride. We’re seriously lucky to have him at our football club. From day one, he’s wanted to learn about our history, commit himself to the fans and give his all every single time he steps across that white line.

Hopefully, he remains at United for the remainder of his career because he’s an excellent footballer, too. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that when he plays, we look like a much better outfit.

Congratulations, Juan!
