Picture: Man United defender offers positive injury update as he’s back in training

This season, defence has been a real problem area for Manchester United. It all stems from the lack of a centre-back signing during the summer transfer window, with both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having to get the best out of the current group.

Perhaps the most consistent defender over the last few years has been Chris Smalling. The Englishman has had his off-days, but for the most part, he has remained solid and done well.

Recently, the former Fulham man has been out injured, but today Smalling took to Twitter to confirm that he’s back working towards full fitness.

Under Solskjaer, everyone got a clean slate and a fresh opportunity to prove their worth. For me, Smalling is probably the best defender we have at the club, so to have him back is a huge boost; particularly when you look at how tough our fixture list looks over the next couple of months.

Now, it’s time for Smalling to stand up and be counted. He will get his chance to show the manager what he can do, and I’m betting that he’ll grab that opportunity with both hands – and we’ll see him partnering the in-form Victor Lindelof at the heart of our defence in the not too distant future.
