Manchester United’s season is over, and Louis van Gaal deserves credit for achieving exactly what he set out to achieve – returning Champions League football to Old Trafford next season.
At times United have played excellent and breathtaking football, particularly against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City back in March and April.
However the last day of the season was a drab 0-0 against Hull City, where the defenders certainly came out on top.
Two of United’s back four have been named in WhoScored’s Team of the Week, as Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones were included with an 8.05 and an 8.38 ratings respectively.
Phil Jones wasn’t afraid to put his body on the line as usual, winning plenty of headers and using his strength to his advantage and close down the Hull threat.
However I’m surprised at Antonio Valencia’s inclusion. The Ecuadorian wasn’t really troubled defensively, and didn’t really offer an awful lot of an attacking threat either.
The pair are joined in the team by the likes of ex-United youth player Tom Heaton, and former striker Mame Biram Diouf who scored a brace against Liverpool.
