Louis van Gaal will go head-to-head with Manuel Pellegrini for the first time on Sunday afternoon, as the first Manchester derby of the season takes place at the Etihad Stadium. City sit four points ahead of United in the table at the moment, with United back in eighth place and looking to close the gap on the top four.
The 4-5-1 formation might be the way to go in this one, as United would likely be more than happy coming away with this one with a hard-earned point. Packing the midfield against a strong City central area is a must – this is where Michael Carrick comes into it.
Daley Blind and Marouane Fellaini are certain to start, leaving one central place up for grabs. Ander Herrera will be keen to return, but Michael Carrick could also feature. His knowledge and experience is key, and he has played in many Manchester derbies before.
Wayne Rooney is certain to return according to Louis van Gaal, but if we are to play this formation the only position he’ll be able to fill in at is left-wing – a role he used to play an awful lot when Ronaldo was on the scene. The rest of the team pretty much picks itself after excellent performances against Chelsea.
