Manchester United have handed a first professional contract to U18 forward, D’Mani Mellor, the club have confirmed.
Mellor, 17, has only been at Old Trafford for a year, but featured heavily for Kieran McKenna’s U18 Premier League North title-winning side, playing 20 times and scoring five goals.
The young attacker earned the majority of his minutes playing in the #10 role just in behind the striker, but his versatility allows him to do a job all across the front line.
Due to his age, it’s likely that he’ll continue with the U18s for at least another season, before hopefully moving up to work with the U23 side in twelve months time.
For inspiration, the Mancunian should take a look at Angel Gomes, who made his Manchester United debut just twelve months ago, as Jose Mourinho continues to debunk the rumour that he doesn’t trust young players.
This new contract allows Mellor to concentrate solely on his football for the next few years at least. If he works hard, the chances will almost certainly come his way. Hopefully, this lad is a household name in five years and we’re all chanting his name across the terraces.
Congratulations, D’Mani!
