Football is a funny old game. For practically all summer, it looked as though Manchester United were going to struggle to move on some dead-wood before the September 2nd deadline.
That was until everything seemed to happen within the space of a week or so. Alexis Sanchez left for Italy, as did Matteo Darmian and Romelu Lukaku. Perhaps the biggest surprise was Chris Smalling’s loan move to AS Roma for a £2.7million fee.
I’d argue that the 29-year-old has been the Red Devils’ most consistent defender over the last half-decade – but that doesn’t make him good enough for United.
Credit to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for moving him on, albeit only for a season as it would have been far easier to keep him around.
Anyway today, AS Roma’s Twitter feed shared some photos of Smalling in training for the first time – and it’s at this point that you finally realise he’s no longer at Old Trafford.
For what it’s worth, I genuinely wish him well. Smalling always gave his all for United. He always tried to do what’s right. Sometimes his best wasn’t good enough, but credit where it’s due as it isn’t easy to spend the best part of a decade at Old Trafford.
