Manchester United’s annual awards ceremony took place last night, with most of the first-team squad in attendance. The Red Devils’ first season under Jose Mourinho is winding down to its conclusion, with just a couple of games left to play.

Five major honours were given to members of the club, and I think that this year, every single trophy landed in the right hands which is great to see.

First of all, Angel Gomes was named the Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year for his performances at U18 level. The young man has been simply outstanding, and he’s immensely talented and definitely one for the future. The scary thing is that he keeps on getting better and better, and he looks a proper player.

The next award was the Goal of the Season, and of course, that went to Henrikh Mkhitaryan for that sublime scorpion kick that he scored against Sunderland before the turn of the year. Let’s be honest, there was no other serious candidate for that honour, and our midfield Armenian more than deserves the accolades.

Next up was Antonio Valencia, who scooped the Players Player of the Year prize. Honestly, winning this one carries that extra weight because it comes from the guys inside of the locker room who you have worked with all season. For them to choose ‘Tony V’ as the best amongst themselves speaks volumes about how brilliant he has been this season.

The Reserve Player of the Year Award went to Axel Tuanzebe. This is a guy who has been given his chance in the first-team recently and he definitely doesn’t look out of place. Credit to him for working so hard, and grasping his opportunity with both hands.

Last but not least, we have the big one. The Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year trophy. This one is voted for by the fans, and David de Gea has scooped the honour for the last three campaigns, but this time, it goes to his fellow countryman Ander Herrera.
