Player Ratings: Anthony Martial wins it for Manchester United, Mata struggles

David de Gea – Made a good save to keep Ben Mee at bay, but his distribution struggles continued. 5/10

Antonio Valencia – Average. You certainly expect more from him when going forward, but he was solid enough defensively. 6/10

Phil Jones – Outstanding. Put his head on everything and mate at least one vital interception. 8/10

Chris Smalling – Started nervously but grew into the game. Did enough. 6/10

Ashley Young – Came oh so close to opening the scoring in the first 45, but he lacked that cutting edge. 6/10

Nemanja Matic – Not great. Gave the ball away far too often and he was careless throughout. He has to improve. 4/10

Paul Pogba – He tried to create and carve openings, and had a chance to kill the game off with a pass but decided to shoot instead. 4/10

Juan Mata – In the second half, it felt like every time he touched the ball he gave it away. Certainly did himself no favours with Sanchez’s impending arrival just on the horizon… 3/10

Jesse Lingard – Worked tirelessly and put a real shift in. Never really managed to get into a threatening position though. 5/10

Anthony Martial – What a player, what a finish. He struck it beautifully and gave United a vital three points. He’s in sensational form. 7/10

Romelu Lukaku – His build-up play is getting better by the week, and that ball he played into Martial for the goal was delightful. 7/10

Subs:

Marcus Rashford – He wasn’t great. Careless, wasteful and sloppy. Jose Mourinho will be worried.

Marouane Fellaini – Won a header or two.

Ander Herrera – Not enough time to mark.
