Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 Middlesbrough (Boro win on pens)

Sergio Romero – Struggled with his distribution and was almost embarrassed with an absolute clanger. 4/10

Matteo Darmian – Kept it simple just as you’d expect. Did alright on the whole, but tired in extra time. 5/10

Chris Smalling – Once again the standout performer. Gave the Boro attackers nothing. Hopefully he’s fit to play at the weekend as he looked leggy towards the end. 7/10 Man of the Match.

Daley Blind – Wasn’t really troubled defensively. Not quite sure what he was thinking as he put the ball into the back of his own net. Thankfully flagged offside. 5/10

Marcos Rojo – Didn’t do an awful lot wrong defensively but wasn’t an attacking threat at all. 5/10

Michael Carrick – Misplaced far too many passes for a player of his calibre. Got caught in possession quite often too. Missed his penalty. 4/10

Marouane Fellaini – The big Belgian actually didn’t look too bad. He looked good in possession and won plenty of headers, unfortunate not to score. 6/10

Jesse Lingard – Looked lively and kept the Boro defenders busy. 6/10

Andreas Pereira – Played well. Kept things ticking over nicely and didn’t look out of place. Mishit a lot of crosses though.

Memphis Depay – Didn’t look interested. Lost possession plenty of times and looked frightened to attack his man. Confidence shatterer. 3/10

James Wilson – Struggled to get in the game minus a snap-shot towards the end of the half. Subbed due to injury. 5/10

Wayne Rooney – His woes continue. Missed a penalty, gave the ball away on plenty of occasions and struggled all-round. 3/10

Anthony Martial – Looked menacing as per usual. Didn’t get anywhere near enough service though. 6/10

Ashley Young – Plenty of pace but no real cutting edge. Missed his penalty. 4/10
