Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid – Lindelof poor, Matic superb

David de Gea – Made a few excellent saves to keep United in the game. 6/10

Antonio Valencia – Solid defensively, and really threatened Madrid’s back line. He was outstanding. 7/10

Chris Smalling – Brilliant. He made a couple of vital blocks and was great in the air. 7/10

Victor Lindelof – Another worrying performance. He was nowhere for Madrid’s opener (albeit offside), and he looked nervous at times. 4/10

Matteo Darmian – Did alright, but he’s just not a natural left-back. That area of the field needs work. 5/10

Nemanja Matic – The best signing we’ll make this summer. Broke up the play, won tackles and threw his weight around. 7/10

Ander Herrera – Lively, but didn’t really have an impact on the match. 5/10

Paul Pogba – A mixed bag. made some great passes, but alongside that were some poor moments. He’ll have to improve his consistency this year. 5/10

Jesse Lingard – Had a very average first-half. Rightfully hooked at the start of the second 45. 4/10

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – He just didn’t get into the game for all his hard work. It’s a shame, because he has bags of talent. 5/10

Romelu Lukaku – Took his goal well, but should have had another, just moments earlier, as he blazed over. Got better as the game went on. 6/10

Subs:

Marcus Rashford – Gave Dani Carvajal all sorts of problems. Should have levelled the match when clean through one-on-one. Positive performance on the whole, though. 6/10

Marouane Fellaini – Wow. Marouane Fellaini, take a bow. He changed the game for United with his physicality, aerial prowess and hold-up play. Top drawer display. 8/10
