Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-1 Valencia CF

David de Gea – Looked a bit rusty in terms of his distribution. Couldn’t do anything about the goal, but made some smart saves. 6/10

Chris Smalling – Did well in the 3-5-2 formation once again. Won a lot of tackles and started United’s attacks from the back. 7/10

Phil Jones – Epitomises the word warrior. Won almost every tackle he went in for, including a superb last-ditch challenge that certainly prevented a goalscoring opportunity. He was immense. Man of the Match. 8/10

Tyler Blackett – Once again, did very well at centre-back. Could well find himself in the mix for a first-team spot this season. 7/10

Ashley Young – Worked hard, but lacked any real quality in the final third. 5/10

Darren Fletcher – Its great to see Fletcher back at his best. He bossed the midfield, formed a nice partnership with Herrera and took his goal superbly. 8/10

Ander Herrera – Kept it simple and played some nice little passes. Its great to have a midfielder who runs with the ball. 7/10

Reece James – Did well once again, and seems made for a wing-back role. Could well be a backup option if United don’t sign anymore left-backs. 6/10

Juan Mata – Surprisingly very quiet. Struggled to get on the ball and really influence the game. 5/10

Wayne Rooney – Frustrating game summed up by the penalty miss. His touch, and passing was poor. Worked as hard as ever, though. 5/10

Javier Hernandez – Offered very little in terms of build up play, and struggled to make an impact on the game. Made a superb headed clearance off the line. 5/10

Subs:

Jesse Lingard – Doesn’t look suited to the wing-back role. Often allowed his man to get by him. 5/10

Shinji Kagawa – Struggled to link up the midfield with the strikers. 5/10

Tom Cleverley – At fault for the Valencia goal, but played some nice passes forward. Did ok. 6/10

Michael Keane – Did alright, but you wonder whether he’ll ever make it at United. 6/10

Marouane Fellaini – Played very well despite the ironic cheers. Won a few tackles, passed the ball nicely and took his goal superbly. 7/10

Adnan Januzaj – Showed glimpses of what he is capable of. He’ll have a huge role this season. 6/10
