Player Ratings: Phenomenal Paul Pogba as Man United thrash Newcastle

David de Gea – The Spaniard made a great save in the second half, but wasn’t really tested aside from that. Couldn’t do anything about the goal. 6/10

Antonio Valencia – Looked great. He’s solid defensively, while also bombing down the right flank all game. What an asset to have. 7/10

Chris Smalling – Solid. He puts 110% effort into everything despite not being the most talented player. Took his header well, which swung the game in our favour. 7/10

Victor Lindelof – Made the fatal slip that led to Newcastle’s goal. Improved greatly after that, though. 6/10

Ashley Young – Not a natural left-back but he’s capable of doing a job. He did it pretty well again today. 6/10

Nemanja Matic – Did ok. Didn’t give Newcastle a sniff of an opportunity in the middle, but his passing game was lacking. 6/10

Paul Pogba – Wow. What a return for the midfield maestro. He absolutely bossed it from start to finish and was by far and away my Man of the Match. Scored once, and also tacked on an assist. 9/10

Marcus Rashford – Played out on the right and struggled, most likely because he couldn’t cut in onto his left foot. 4/10

Juan Mata – Never really got into the game. Played a few nice passes here and there, but didn’t make any real impact. 5/10

Anthony Martial – Scored a header and looked menacing. Mourinho will be pleased that handing the Frenchman a start paid off. 7/10

Romelu Lukaku – He looked up for it today, and a decent performance was rewarded with a goal which he took brilliantly. 7/10

Marouane Fellaini – Came on and secured the three points.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – It was absolutely wonderful to see the big man back. It will take time for him to get back to his best, but you gotta’ start somewhere.

Ander Herrera – Lively for ten minutes or so.
