Player Ratings: United 0-0 Chelsea

David Moyes started his Old Trafford career with a credible draw against fellow title rivals, Chelsea. United were the better team throughout but struggled to create any chances – justifying Moyes’ attempts to lure Cesc Fabregas to the club. Chelsea only had eight touches in our box, which tells its own story.

Carrick and Cleverley also made their points; They bossed Lampard and Ramires throughout the game which was excellent to see, and it certainly eased a few nerves regarding our midfield problems. It was also excellent to see Vidic and Ferdinand play together again, both looked solid as a rock.

Player ratings:

David de Gea: Only had a couple of routine saves to make, looked comfortable. 6/10

Phil Jones: As a natural centre-back he looked out of position at right-back. Played well defensively, but struggled going forward. 6/10

Nemanja Vidic: The Serbian monster was absolutely rock solid. Its great that he’s had a full pre-season and looking back at his brilliant best. Nobody was getting by him last night. Man of the Match. 8/10

Rio Ferdinand: Make an excellent last ditch tackle to stop a potential Chelsea goal. Kept Hazard and Oscar quiet. 7/10

Patrice Evra: The Frenchman had an excellent game. He offered himself as an outlet down the left wherever possible, and did well defensively. 7/10

Michael Carrick: He and Cleverley bossed Lampard and Ramires throughout. He couldn’t find that killer ball though. 7/10

Tom Cleverley: Played surprisingly superb. He picked his passes and kept the ball moving. 7/10

Antonio Valencia: Frustrating. He always looked to cut back inside rather than beat his man. 5/10

Wayne Rooney: Wayne got a great reception from the fans and his performance reflected that. He was at the heart of everything good for United and he certainly looked up for it. 7/10

Danny Welbeck: Had a poor game but didn’t get much service. 6/10

Robin van Persie: Also quiet due to a lack of service and the number of Chelsea players swarmed around him. 6/10

Subs:

Ashley Young: Did ok. At least he tried to beat his man and put a few crosses in. 6/10

Ryan Giggs: Not enough time to mark.
