Player Ratings: United 3-0 Olympiacos

David de Gea – What a keeper. What a man. De Gea’s superb double save went a long way to us qualifying tonight. Outstanding. 9/10

Rafael – Bombed forward from minute one to minute ninety. Much improved from his calamitous game at the weekend. 7/10

Rio Ferdinand – His calmness and stability showed. He won his tackles, and won his headers. Solid performance. 7/10

Phil Jones – Warrior. He isn’t afraid to put his head in where it hurts, and he never shirks a tackle. 8/10

Patrice Evra – Great for the first hour but tired towards the end and was often out of position. 6/10

Michael Carrick – Back to his best. He controlled the midfield and kept the ball moving forward. 7/10

Ryan Giggs – What can you say about this man. He played some excellent passes forward that led to goals and chances, and he actually ran at the Olympiacos back four! Man of the Match. 9/10

Antonio Valencia – Pressed high, ran at his man and played some nice passes. Solid game. 7/10

Wayne Rooney – Carried United through. He was absolutely everywhere and that pass for Robin’s second goal was pure instinct. Magic. 8/10

Danny Welbeck – The Manchester lad played for the badge and it showed. Chased everything down, often beat his man and stretched their back four. Super effort all-round. 8/10

Robin van Persie – Decent penalty, super finish and a clever free-kick made it an excellent night for our Dutchman. Back to his best. 9/10

Subs:

Darren Fletcher – Not enough time to mark.

Marouane Fellaini – Not enough time to mark.

Ashley Young – Not enough time to mark.

  1. You’re very harsh with your ratings =)

I thought Rooney merited a 9 at least. He was absolutely sensational, especially his work rate was tremendous.

I also thought Rafael was excellent. he gave them nothing on the left wing. Was reliable and strong. Very mature performance. Also thought Robin had a good game, but I’d have given him 8/10. Apart from his goals he definitely didn’t make more of a difference than Robin.

  2. the fact that your rating of carrick of being back to his best was merely a 7…. says it all.

i still believe he is a wasted player on the pitch, he is the laziest footballer i have ever seen. if he travels distance, its certainly not doing anything productive! for a holding midfielder, he makes nowhere near enough tackles, barely passes up the mitch. it was giggs…. someone practically at retirement who hasnt played in 8 weeks that made 2 productive passes leading to our goals.

carrick…. was witness to all of this….

kagawa…. such a wasted talent!!!! barely plays for utd…. 60 ish min for japan get a goal and an asist… how can this guy not be given chances????
