Player Ratings: United vs. West Ham

Robin van Persie’s goal after just 31 seconds sealed all three points for United last night, although it probably should’ve been much more comfortable. We also looked much stronger defensively, and in particular Chris Smalling and Rafael impressed. We were on top for the majority of the game, although we didn’t create many chances.

West Ham had a few decent chances of their own, but we were certainly the better side and deserved the victory that keeps us on top of the league. Van Persie now has 9 league goals, and he sits second in the goalscoring charts behind Liverpool’s racist forward, Luis Suarez.

Anders Lindegaard: He was solid throughout, he didn’t have an awful lot to do but when called upon he did his job well. 6/10

Rafael: Man of the match. He kept bombing forward offering width to our narrow side, he handled the speed of Matt Jarvis superbly. 8/10

Chris Smalling: Continued his return from injury with another solid game, he was dominant in the air and kept Andy Carroll quiet until the big man was eventually subbed off. 7/10

Jonny Evans: Also strong, he is fast becoming our first choice centre-back, he mopped up well and cleared his lines when he needed to, almost cost us a goal late on when he allowed Maiga space. 6/10

Patrice Evra: He also offered width on the left, he did well defensively but he didn’t really threaten going forward. 6/10

Michael Carrick: Carrick did his job well, he just sat in behind the back four and broke up play excellently. His superb pass allowed Robin van Persie to give us the lead. 7/10

Tom Cleverley: Had an average game, tested Jaaskelainen with a stinging shot in the second half, but didn’t really control the game as he would’ve liked. 6/10

Anderson: Sir Alex said Anderson picked himself in this one and he certainly didn’t disappoint. He beat his man time and time again and linked up play well. 7/10

Wayne Rooney: Had a poor game by his standards, he gave the ball away far too often and his touch was heavy. 5/10

Javier Hernandez: Chicha had an average game, his movement and pace dragged the West Ham defenders all over the place, he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after a good effort forced a decent save from Jaaskelainen. 6/10

Robin van Persie: Scored the all-important goal that gave us the lead, he held the ball up well and delivered a few decent crosses into the box. 7/10

Subs:

Ashley Young: Another poor game albeit from the bench this time. The West Ham defenders were tiring and he didn’t really threaten. 5/10

Danny Welbeck: His first job when he came on was to come on and defend a corner which he headed away, didn’t really have time to affect the game going forward. 6/10

Phil Jones: Not enough time to mark.
