Player Ratings: Wolfsburg 3-2 Manchester United – woeful Smalling display

David de Gea – Made some outstanding saves to keep Manchester United in with a shout. 7/10

Guillermo Varela – Definitely one of the positives on the night, he looked great defensively. 7/10

Chris Smalling – Perhaps his worst game of the season. He struggled with positioning, and to make it worse limped through the last fifteen minutes. 4/10

Daley Blind – Struggled with the aerial threat brought to the table by Wolfsburg. 5/10

Matteo Darmian – Was out of position far too often, before being subbed due to injury. 4/10

Bastian Schweinsteiger – Didn’t look good whatsoever. He passing was wayward, and gave the Wolfsburg attack way too much time on the ball. 4/10

Marouane Fellaini – Not his best evening. Gave the ball away an awful lot, and perhaps should have scored with a header. 3/10

Jesse Lingard – You have to love his work rate, but when in the final third it seems that he just lacks that cutting edge. 5/10

Juan Mata – Did not understand why he got subbed off. Played well in the #10 role. 5/10

Memphis Depay – Looked a menace, and unafraid to go at the Wolfsburg defenders. 6/10

Anthony Martial – Took his goal wonderfully. Lacked any real help after that point though. 6/10

Subs:

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson – Came on and on the whole looked very solid.

Nick Powell – Nice to see him return to action.

Michael Carrick – At fault for Wolfsburg’s third goal.
