Arsenal are weighing up a shock move to sign Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling, according to The Gambling Times, per The Sun.
Apparently, Wenger wants to add a centre-back to his squad during the January transfer window, with the Frenchman wanting to include Smalling in any deal for Alexis Sanchez – however, The Gunners acquired Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead.
However, Arsenal are set to continue with their interest in signing Smalling, who is enjoying his football at the moment following an injury to Eric Bailly.
The Englishman seems right at home alongside Phil Jones at present, and, in my opinion, it just wouldn’t make sense to sell him during the mid-season transfer window.
At 28, he’s well into his peak years, and although he isn’t someone you’d like to see starting every single week, Smalling can come in and do a job when required. He’s an excellent player to have in and around the squad, and personally, I hope United turn down any approaches for the former Fulham man.
With eighteen months left on his Old Trafford deal, the Red Devils will be in no rush to sell him, so no doubt he’ll be here until the summer at the very least.
