Manchester United simply aren’t having a good time of things at the moment, with Jose Mourinho’s men struggling to string any real run of results together in the Premier League. That culminated in an embarrassing 4-0 defeat away at Chelsea, where one man in particular, had an absolute nightmare.
That man was, of course, Chris Smalling. The Englishman is usually oh so reliable in the bigger matches, but as BBC pundit Dany Mills rightly states, he lost his head yesterday and he just wasn’t good enough.
“Manchester United are not aggressive enough,” the pundit told BBC Sport. “Chris Smalling is having one, he leaves his man. I am not sure what Smalling is doing. You have to mark your man until the ball is cleared. I am not sure where his head is? He has to get it together.”
You could argue that the 26-year-old was at fault for each of Chelsea’s four goals, and his overall display certainly didn’t fill anyone with confidence – and Mourinho must be extremely concerned.
When you couple that horrendous form with the fact Eric Bailly is set for a spell on the sidelines, it does not look good defensively for Manchester United as they are so thin on the ground in that area of the field already.
