Pundit calls for Jose Mourinho to drop key man if poor form continues, hints he could be sold under new manager

Manchester United Football Club just haven’t been scoring too many goals recently. That’s despite the fact that Jose Mourinho has a star-studded attack at his disposal.

The Red Devils’ main problem over the last few weeks has been their striker. Not only hasn’t Romelu Lukaku been sticking the ball in the back of the net, but the hold-up play, the laying it onto teammates hasn’t been good enough, either.

You can argue that the ex-Everton man hasn’t had anywhere near enough support. That’s certainly a valid point, however, Lukaku has to take some of the blame too…

Now pundit Craig Burley has weighed in on the situation. He reckons that there is a possibility Lukaku could be sold under new management should Mourinho lose his job. Failing that, the Belgium forward better buck his ideas up, unless he risks losing his place in the side to a certain Marcus Rashford…

“He’s one of a number of United players I think that once (Jose) Mourinho goes will have to be outed by the new regime,” Burley explained, quoted by the Daily Star.

“He’s a good player but I think watching him lately he’s not making the right runs.

“I wouldn’t say he was a clever striker, he’s big and powerful of course he is.

“He does get his ratio of goals of course, the graphic there will say it’s against the weaker teams.

“He will get a chance against the so-called bigger teams because they’ve got some big games coming up.

“But the other side of the coin is if he’s not playing well and he’s not making the runs, Rashford is a natural striker.

“They’ve got a replacement, yes he’s young but he’s an international.

“He’s got experience, he’s quick, he’s clever, he’s not frightened to try anything.

“If Lukaku is not cutting it over the next game or two, he’s going to have to get him out of the team. Simple as that.”

Burley makes some valid points. The knock on Lukaku has always been that he fails to turn up in the big moments, under the greatest pressure. Rashford, we know, will score against the very best – just as Liverpool what he did to them last season.

It’s frustrating because we all know what Lukaku can do. He’s the perfect forward in a Mourinho team due to his physical style of play, height, and aerial ability. He is struggling at the moment, that cannot be ignored. Perhaps dropping him to the bench will re-ignite that fire in his belly and we’ll start to see him perform better. it’s certainly worth a shot…
