Manchester United have confirmed that they’ve reached an agreement to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.
The midfielder, 25, will now jet off to take part in the World Cup with his native Brazil; the favourites to win the tournament.
Having played his football in Ukraine, we’re not really fully sure what to expect from the box-to-box midfielder, but pundit Steve Nicol has given us an insight on Fred.
Nicol has explained that it is a wise move to bring Fred in, before adding that he’s already better than two key midfielders who spent last season at Old Trafford.
“Yeah I think so (it was a wise move),” he told ESPN FC, per the Daily Star.
“The guy’s a talent and if Brazil do win the World Cup and he plays a major part, then that £50m they’ve paid for him could end up being £60m or even £70m.
“So yes, I think it’s a smart move.
“The guy’s a talent, the guy’s a player, he makes them better.
“He’s better than Fellaini, in my opinion, he’s better than Herrera as well. So absolutely an upgrade for United.
“The only thing this guy doesn’t do is score goals really.
“But United, in that position in the middle of the park, are looking for someone to shut things down and when they get the ball, open them up. He does both.”
I’m genuinely excited to watch Fred in action. United have been craving for an additional top-level midfielder, someone who can help Paul Pogba flourish.
It may take the man from Brazil time to adjust and adapt to the Premier League game, but in time, we genuinely could have a world-class player on our hands.
Credit has to go to Edward Woodward for getting this deal done before he heads to Russia, because no doubt his price would have massively increased should he have a good tournament.
The first chance you’ll get to see United’s new man in action will be June 10th, when Brazil take on Austria in a pre-World Cup friendly.
