Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United was a transfer rumour that just wouldn’t go away over the summer. Obviously, the deal never went through. The Belgian ended up staying at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils’ defensive woes have been evident at this season’s start. Even the defensive-minded Jose Mourinho has struggled to keep clean sheets with the current crop – further highlighting the missed opportunity over the summer when Alderweireld was seemingly available.
Now, former Liverpool man, and Spurs supporter, Steve Nicol has had his say on the situation. He seemed confident regarding the centre-back staying at White Hart Lane; although he did refuse to rule out the possibility of the deal happening.
“Listen, money talks,” Nicol said, per the Daily Express.
“But from everything that Alderweireld’s saying, he’s sending messages that he wants to stay.
“Now, he could be just saying the right thing and actually hoping that Man United do come back in for him.
“But if I’m a Spurs fan, I like what he’s coming out with.”
As Nicol says, money is absolutely everything in football. If United come in and offer Alderweireld a huge pay increase, he’d be mad not to grasp that opportunity with both hands. Likewise for Spurs, although they’d be losing a brilliant player, they do have cover in the form of Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez. We all know how much Daniel Levy loves his money, I’d be surprised if he didn’t lunge at the chance to actually get some money for the centre-back before losing him on a free.
For now, Alderweireld looks happy enough with Spurs. Who knows what’ll happen over the next few months. It would be a brilliant acquisition, though…
