After signing Brazil international Fred before the tournament, Manchester United fans were eager to see their new man in action. However, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man failed to make a single appearance.
After his huge £50+million transfer fee, we were all left somewhat flabbergasted as to why he didn’t play. Let’s be honest, Brazil hardly set the tournament alight. Perhaps Fred would have brought fresh ideas to the table. Now, we know there was more too it than just tactical decisions.
That’s according to their boss Tite. He has explained that Fred never made a full recovery from the injury he picked up in training before the tournament kicked off; and that’s what caused him to not play even a minute out in Russia.
“Fred had a problem with his injury and failed to make a full recovery,” Tite said, per the Manchester Evening News. “In general and physical terms, the team flew. It was not the physical aspect that was decisive in defeat.”
While it’s disappointing, I guess the focus is now on him getting himself ready go for the start of the new season. His pre-season will obviously be limited due to his extra-long campaign at the World Cup, which makes it tough for him.
I always have concerns about players who are signed in a World Cup year, particularly if they go deep into the tournament. They generally don’t have as much time to gel and connect with their new teammates, which often tells out on the field; especially during the early portion of the season.
Hopefully, he can put this disappointment behind him and hit the ground running. We’re all expecting big things from this lad, and I simply cannot wait to see him in action while donning Manchester United red.
