After a narrow 1-0 victory over the Turkish Champions back in September, United head to Istanbul having already wrapped up qualification into the knockout stages of this years Champions League. Sir Alex has named the 21-man squad, which includes seven players yet to feature in the Champions League.
The fact that we’ve already qualified means we can afford to leave key names at home, allowing them to rest up for the league game against QPR on Saturday. The players who aren’t travelling include Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and David De Gea.
Its looking likely that Phil Jones will make his first start of the season at the heart of defence, and he’ll probably partner Scott Wootton, who’ll be looking to bounce back after two costly errors against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup.
The youngsters in the squad will benefit massively from the experience, although you’d expect Sir Alex to opt for a relatively experienced starting XI, a few of these youngsters may get the chance to make their mark from the bench. I’d like Nick Powell to feature at some point, as well as first team debuts for both Davide Petrucci and Josh King.
Travelling squad in full: Sam Johnstone, Anders Lindegaard; Rafael, Alexander Buttner, Phil Jones, Tom Thorpe, Marnick Vermijl, Scott Wootton; Michael Carrick, Davide Petrucci, Larnell Cole, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Nick Powell, Ashley Young, Ryan Tunnicliffe; Javier Hernandez, Joshua King, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda.
