Manchester United’s chase for a centre-back went on for the whole summer. Eventually, their search was to no avail.
The season’s start has painted the perfect picture as to why Jose Mourinho wanted to bring in a new defender. No doubt that search will continue through January and beyond.
Now, a target could well have fallen into their laps. Milan Skriniar, who was linked with an Old Trafford move a few months ago, is yet to agree a new contract with Inter Milan; plunging his future with the Serie A side into doubt.
The report comes from the excellent Sport Witness, who say that they’re offering the defender €2.5m-a-year, with Skriniar holding out for around €3million.
At 23, Skriniar is young, learning and growing as a footballer. While that is all well and good, I’d much prefer to see United move for someone with experience as that’s what the club needs right now.
We’ve a whole host of young centre-halves on the books, including Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof who are both struggling with confidence right now. I’d much prefer it if United renewed their interest in Toby Alderweireld. He knows the league, is that veteran presence and will become a real leader of the defence.
