Manchester United have had a whole host of top quality centre-halves on their books down the years, from Gary Pallister to Nemanja Vidic. However, the best one I’ve ever seen is without a doubt Rio Ferdinand. The Englishman is just a sensational defender.
He gave his all for this great football club during his time here, and won the absolute lot. Now 38, he’s turned his hand to punditry and for me, he does a very good job at it.
Now, he’s had his say on one of Manchester United’s new centre-backs, Eric Bailly. It’s pretty clear that Rio is a huge fan of the Ivorian’s, which tells you just how good the former Sevilla man has been for us since his move here.
Ferdinand highlighted Bailly’s aggressive style of defending, but also explained that he has to pick his moments when it comes to those situations.
“He’s aggressive, he’s always on the front foot trying to win the first ball.“ Ferdinand said whilst speaking to Sport360.
“That’s great, you’ve just got to pick your moments and making sure you don’t leave yourself exposed.”
“He’s had a decent first season, in which a few injuries have set him back a little bit.”
“He’s very athletic, which you need in the modern game.”
“On the ball, it is something which he’ll need to keep on working.”
“He’s got all the tools and credentials to be a top defender if he keeps on improving.”
Honestly, in terms of longevity and what he can offer this club, I feel Bailly could eventually go down as the best signing we made this summer. He’s just a wonderful footballer, and when he’s on form, the opponents just cannot get past him.
Bailly has the perfect skillset to succeed in the Premier League. He has pace, physicality and he can also play a bit with the ball at his feet, too. Some may say he is the perfect blend of both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic; which can only be a good thing.
