Manchester United have signed Romelu Lukaku. The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the option for a further twelve months – meaning he could well be at the club until 2023 when he’ll be 30.
Shortly after signing, Manchester United conducted Lukaku’s first official interview with MUTV.
Amongst the topic of discussion was exactly why he chose Old Trafford as his next career move, and it certainly makes for great reading for us Red Devils fans.
“The history, the players that play for the club and the way that the club is always hungry to win trophies. It is something that I want and it is something that I was searching for. For me, it was the perfect opportunity to make the big step and as a club, when Manchester United comes and asks you to play for them then you do not say no.”
To hear that he could not say no to Manchester United is great. It just shows that, even though we finished sixth last season, the best players in the world still want to make the move to the Theatre of Dreams.
It highlights what a great thing Jose Mourinho is building as Manchester United manager, and you get the feeling that this is just the beginning for him.
When it comes to building teams and identifying weaknesses, there is nobody better in that regard than the self-proclaimed Special One. He would have covered every angle, making sure Lukaku is the right fit for this football club – before finally sanctioning a move.
Lukaku is a player who scored an extremely impressive 25 league goals last term, which is seven more than our best output last season which was Zlatan Ibrahimovic with 18.
Big things are certainly expected, and he has some huge shoes to fill. It’s going to be brilliant watching him wear our jersey.
