Manchester United have a new hero. Romelu Lukaku has signed on the dotted line, and he will become the Red Devils’ new hero for the 2017/18 season. The Belgian will be hoping to make an instant impact in a new jersey, with a new shirt number.
Whilst at Everton, he wore the #10 jersey, but at the Theatre of Dreams, he has taken the #9. What’s even better than that is he’s asked Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s permission to take his number off him – a move that’ll already endear him to the fans.
The 24-year-old told ESPN: “I asked (Ibrahimovic’s) permission for No 9. I want to thank him for allowing me.”
You just have to love this move from him. It wasn’t something he necessarily had to do, but it is a touch of class from the forward. It shows that he respects the position he is in, and he feels blessed to be wearing such an iconic jersey.
It’s a number that has been worn by some greats of years gone by, including the likes of Andy Cole. Lukaku definitely has some rather big shoes to fill but I’m sure he’ll be up to the challenge. What a day this is for him.
Now the hard work begins. Winning his place in the Manchester United starting line-up will not be an easy task, but he definitely has what it takes. Hopefully, he gets off to a promising start during pre-season.
