Manchester United Football Club have already added two new faces to the ranks, with Jose Mourinho doing his utmost to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League crown next season.
Fred and Diogo Dalot will no doubt become key players over the years, but you cannot help but feel United still need more. Their squad is miles away from being the finished product, with holes aplenty that are glaringly obvious.
Now, club legend Ryan Giggs has had his say on the situation. The Welsh Wizard has identified two key areas in the field in which his former employers need to invest in; centre-back and midfield.
Giggsy even goes on to name individual players; Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, that’s the ‘type’ that United’s record appearance maker would like to see at Old Trafford.
“In midfield I’d like to see – we’ve been saying it for a long time, we thought Pogba would be that attacking midfielder I would like to see,” he said, per the Manchester Evening News. “They don’t grow on trees unfortunately, a Modric, a Kroos type who can keep the ball. And also I think a centre-half we need.
“All the successful United teams over the years – (Gary) Pallister, (Steve) Bruce, Jaap Stam, (Rio) Ferdinand, (Nemanja) Vidic – they’ve always had top-class centre-halves.
“Again, they don’t grow on trees. Who do we get, I don’t know, but I think a midfielder and centre-half are vital.”
It’s tough, as he says, top-class midfield generals are a rare commodity. Fortunately for Real Madrid, they have two… I do think that Paul Pogba has the potential to become United’s go-to man in that area of the field, but sometimes, he just doesn’t take the game by the scruff of its neck and carry his teammates through matches.
In terms of centre-backs, that’s just a mess at the moment. Eric Bailly is supremely talented, but he spent the campaign on the treatment table. Phil Jones is an accident waiting to happen and know whos what we’re going to get out of Victor Lindelof. Toby Alderweireld has been linked, he’d no doubt be a fantastic piece of business.
