Manchester United spent big to bring in one of the best Premier League strikers over the last few years. There is absolutely no doubt that Romelu Lukaku will be a stunning acquisition for the Red Devils, and over time, the 24-year-old should rack up quite the goals tally.
He’s already shown his instinctive finishing and maturity beyond his years whilst out on tour, finding the back of the net three times – and all of those goals were scored in different but impressive ways.
This is a man who has scored 20+ goals in each of the last three seasons he has taken part in, and United haven’t had that kind of consistent output for years.
Now, club legend Ryan Giggs has had his say on the situation, and he has highlighted one key area that Lukaku has to improve in during this season. The Welsh Wizard reckons he will score goals, but he has to improve on his first touch, whilst also getting used to the pressures of playing for Manchester United.
“Manchester United needed some new blood and the injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic removed the question as to whether he was replaced,” he told Sky Sports, quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“Romelu Lukaku will score goals, there’s no doubt about that.”
“He’s still got to work on his first touch but he has already been scoring plenty at West Brom and Everton and will get more chances at Old Trafford.
“What he won’t have experienced is the pressure of being a Manchester United forward. He wouldn’t have felt that before and you can’t get away with the odd mediocre performance.
“There were too many home games last season where we didn’t take our chances but it’s not just down to Lukaku, the rest of the team need to be contributing as well.”
I guess a lot depends on how quickly Lukaku will settle in. If he scores a couple of meaningful goals early on, it’ll only speed up the process. However, if he has a bit of a dry spell, it’ll become a case of him trying too hard – which could make it take a little longer for him to settle down.
One thing is for certain, United have signed a top goalscorer who hasn’t even begin to approach his peak years yet. Mourinho knows exactly what he wants out of his star striker – and Lukaku fits the self-proclaimed Special One’s tactics down to an absolute tee. I cannot wait for him to get started.
