Over the weekend, Manchester United Football Club paid homage to one of the most underrated players I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Michael Carrick celebrated his ten-plus year stay at the Theatre of Dreams with a brilliant testimonial game.
The veteran midfielder has won absolutely everything at Manchester United, completing the set with a Europa League victory just a fortnight ago. He’s been absolutely wonderful for our great club, and that is a view echoed by club legend, Ryan Giggs.
After the game, the Welsh Wizard had his say on his former teammate and claimed that Carrick is a player that Mourinho can trust when he’s on the field.
He has been that calming influence on the team, and when he does play, the rest of the lads seem to grow in confidence purely because of his know-how.
“Michael just makes players around him play better,” Giggs told ITV, quoted by The Manchester Evening News.
“He’s got that calming influence that you can see on and off the pitch, it’s a pleasure to play with him. When you play with players, you want to trust them when they have the ball and Michael is one of those players.”
“When he is on the pitch, you can trust him. He always makes the right decision.”
He’s just a cracking footballer and a top bloke. I’m so pleased that he was handed a one-year contract extension. Although he knows that he will not be starting every game, he still has a massive role to play both on and off the field.
That winning mentality will rub off on the younger lads in the dressing room, because there was a time where pretty much the whole squad had a Premier League winners medal in their locker but as we know, that isn’t the case anymore. Carrick is one of the few with an impressive trophy haul, and his importance cannot be understated.
