Manchester United put in a performance to forget this evening, with Jose Mourinho’s men losing 3-2 away at Brighton.
In all honesty, the best team won on the day, the Red Devils just weren’t at it from the get-go and they got everything they deserved.
To a man, United just didn’t show up. However, following the match, one player, in particular, came in for criticism from Sam Allardyce; Anthony Martial. The Frenchman was labelled not good enough for the Red Devils, and the former England manager only just stopped short of stating that the 22-year-old should be sold.
‘You’d look at Louis van Gaal who brought in Martial and it doesn’t matter who the manager is, Martial isn’t good enough for Manchester United,’ he told beIN Sports, per The Metro.
‘If you want to be super critical and look at the players he’s got. He is not the player they thought they were getting. ‘
There was a chance where you get a very big young talent for £50million. But we are in his third season and he is no better than when he first came. ‘He should have progressed. He should be as good as Leroy Sane and people like that. That’s not Jose’s fault.’
I, like the majority, love Martial. He’s a super footballer to watch on his day. The problem? That day isn’t anywhere near often enough. Consistency is what he has majorly lacked with. That doesn’t look like changing any time soon.
The blame isn’t all on the player’s shoulders, though. Mourinho has to take some of the stick. It was the self-proclaimed Special One who chose to bench Martial for Sanchez while the Frenchman was in a brilliant patch of form. He’s never been the same since.
For now, Martial isn’t going anywhere. I’d be more surprised if he did remain at the club next summer, though, as opposed to him leaving, which looks even likelier by the day.
