It’s that time of year again, the Premier League season has ended, and it’s still 2 months until the new one kicks off. But as the Premier league season ends, the silly season begins, where every player in the world seems to get linked to United as agents try to manoeuvre their clients for summer moves. This has to happen because of our continued successs.
However, I would like to explore the possibilities of a few of the players that have been linked with us this summer.
Kevin Strootman (PSV)
United have been linked to many midfielders over the last few years, but here is one that really interests me. We have been accused far too often that we lack the defensive steel in the centre of the pitch since a certain Roy Keane departed the club.
Strootman, 22, who only arrived at PSV last year, is one player who could be our hard man in the middle of the park, whilst some of our more creative players, including our new signing, Shinji Kagawa, can move the ball forwards. We have also been linked with a move for Tottenham’s Luka Modric. He’s a fantastic player, who would add a great deal of creativity, but after Spurs rejected £35m last season, and the fact that Modric is 26 already, it’s a deal I don’t see United pursuing.
The newspapers have linked us with a bid for Strootman in the £14m area, and for a 22 year old enforcer, who has just returned from Euro 2012 with the Netherlands, I can see this as an attractive deal for Sir Alex.
James Rodriguez (FC Porto)
Another player who has been linked with United is the young Columbian, James Rodriguez who is currently flying high with Porto. With contract talks with Nani apparently stalling, Rodriguez is seen as United’s prime candidate to replace him. It has been revealed that Rodriguez’s release clause is €45m (£40m), however we have been linked with a £25m bid, with Anderson going in the opposite direction, back to his former club. £30m + Ando would maybe secure a deal?
I for one would love United to sign Rodriguez, who has been described as the ‘South American Cristiano Ronaldo’, and we all know what Ronaldo did at United! He can play on either wing, or through the middle, and has plenty of goals in him and would be an ideal replacement for Nani if he does decide to move on. He would also provide someone to the squad with a natural left foot.
Jordi Alba/Leighton Baines
One place United definitely do need to make a new addition is at left back. We are blessed to have one of the best left backs in the world over the last few years in Patrice Evra, but like us all, Patrice isn’t getting any younger. Since the 2007/8 season, Evra has played an average of 48 games a season. This year, his defensive abilities have come under scrutiny, and with young Fabio da Silva going out on loan, we certainly need to strengthen.
We have been linked with both Jordi Alba of Valencia and Leighton Baines of Everton. Preferably, I would love to sign Alba. Hes a young dynamic full back who is already into the Spanish national squad. However, with Barcelona being strongly linked with him, I sadly can’t see a United being successful in doing a deal for the young Catalan.
Alternatively, we have been linked to Leighton Baines, but as ever with English players, he is valued by Everton at £12m-£20m (depending on the newspaper you read). If we were to get him for £12m, then I’d see that as a good piece of business, but £20m is far too much for the 27 year old.
Only time will tell who United will sign, if anyone. But one thing is for sure, United will continue to be linked with players right until the end of the transfer window on the 31st August! As always, it’s going to be a long summer.
