Sky Sources: Man United not prioritising new contracts for defensive duo

Manchester United are not prioritising new contracts for Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

That’s according to Sky Sports News, with the English defensive duo amongst eleven players who are out-of-contract next summer.

Apparently, if United do sign new defenders, the pair could well find themselves having to move on; which would make sense as the performance levels haven’t been anywhere near good enough recently.

I look at Smalling as a decent squad player. He can come in and do a solid job, but on the biggest stage, when the lights are at their brightest, we’re often left wanting.

As for Jones, well, that’s just been a disaster. Just when you think he’s turning things around, the centre-back picks up another injury which sets him back a few months and then we’re back to square one.

Personally, I’d keep Smalling around. He’s been a good servant is rarely on the treatment table and he never moans while always giving his all. As for Jones, I’d move him on. That’s not to say he isn’t talented, but he needs to be playing week-in-week-out to put the injury issues behind him. Unfortunately, he isn’t going to get that opportunity at United; particularly if new signings are made.
