Sky Sports: Man United no closer to agreeing new David de Gea contract

Manchester United’s failure to secure Champions League football was always likely to cost them at some point. Now, it seems as though we’re beginning to feel the effects of that.

According to Sky Sports News, the Reds are no closer to agreeing a new deal with superstar goalkeeper David de Gea – who is still holding off on putting pen to paper and committing his future to Old Trafford.

De Gea, 27, is out of contract next summer and would be free to speak to other clubs about signing a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs as early as January.

Sky Sports state that De Gea wants assurances that United will compete for major honours, while also wanting a significant wage increase – as he looks to match Alexis Sanchez’s weekly wage packet.

In terms of his wages, I completely understand why he’d want to increase his money. De Gea has been our best performer over the last half-decade and if anyone deserves a massive contract, it’s him.

Where trophies are concerned I’m just not sure what United can do at this point. They’re miles away from the top clubs and it’s going to take some serious amount of sweet-talking to convince De Gea to stick around.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, we’ve done well to keep him for this long and it does feel like he could well be on his way out at some point in the not too distant future.
