Last summer, Manchester United sent out a real statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League as they picked up Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer. The 35-year-old forward hit the ground running, scoring 28 goals across all competitions and scooping two major pieces of silverware in the process.
Now we’ve been given another update in regards to whether he’ll be staying at Old Trafford beyond this summer – and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he’ll be staying on for another year.
According to Sky Sports News’ sources, it is unlikely that the Red Devils are going to offer Ibrahimovic a new deal and in my opinion, that is a move that makes complete sense.
For sentimental and leadership value, I’d love to see Ibra return for another year but it just doesn’t make good business sense to keep him. This is a player that is going to be out injured for the long term, and quite simply put, he isn’t getting any younger.
That now puts more pressure on Edward Woodward to deliver a new striker signing during this current transfer window, because it’d be extremely harsh to lump all the pressure on the shoulders of both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
We should know for definite tomorrow when Manchester United are due to release their retained players list at 09:00 am GMT.
