Jose Mourinho donning the Old Trafford touchline could well become a regular occurrence from next season, if you believe the latest words from Sky Sports News pundit Phil Thomson. The Liverpool fan reckons the deal is done already, with a plan in place for Mourinho to take over this summer.
“If you’re asking my honest opinion, then I think the deal is already done.” Thomson began.
“There’s been a lot in the papers and United have a very close relationship with Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s super agent.
“There’s also been the talk that they’re still harbouring the idea of bringing back Cristiano Ronaldo, who also has Mendes as his agent, so Mourinho coming in could sway that.
“If Van Gaal did win the FA Cup and finish in the top four, then my option is that he should get the other year, but I think it would be extremely difficult for United to go back on an agreement because Mourinho isn’t the sort of guy that waits around.”
There are certainly bold claims from Thomson, but why would he put his neck on the chopping block unless he believes them to be true? If Manchester United do decide to part with Louis van Gaal this summer, then it feels as though the only viable choice for a replacement is Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese manager is one of the best in the business, and without doubt the greatest Premier League manager of the modern era. It feels as though he has been craving the United job since he left Chelsea the first time almost ten years ago now, and he could be finally set to get his wish.
