Solskjaer heaps praise on Matic who is ‘playing some of his best football’

Well, Old Trafford Faithful HQ has been a Nemanja Matic love-in this morning, with the Serbia international putting in an incredible performance at home to Sheffield United last night.

Manchester United needs that midfielder who will sit in and do the dirty work. Scott McTominay does that, though he doesn’t have the experience of Matic just yet, so positionally, the Scot often finds himself further up the field.

Last night was a defensive-midfield clinic from Matic. He kept it simple, mopped up when needed, won tackles and didn’t give the Sheffield United attackers any space whatsoever. It was great to see.

After the game the United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, heaped the praise on Matic, stating that the ex-Chelsea man is ‘playing some of his best football’ and it’s true.

“Nemanja is playing some of his best football. He’s had a good pre-season for the first time in many, many years and today he was dictating the game and his experience is vital for us,” said Solskjaer, per ManUtd.com.

“I’m very, very happy that we’re seeing the best of Nemanja and he’ll be important for us and then of course it’s down to performances and if Nemanja wants to stay but at the moment he’s in great form.”

I didn’t realise Matic hadn’t had a full pre-season for a few seasons, but he’s definitely reaping the rewards of that right now. He looks fresh, fit and ready to play a key part in a United side who are looking to secure a top-four finish.

Yes, it does help having McTominay there, who can step in when needed, but full credit to Matic. He has been excellent and I’ll be the first to apologise after writing him off earlier on in the term.

Long may it continue as we’re going to need Matic at his best if we’re to win a trophy and secure Champions League qualification for next season.
