Over the summer, Manchester United’s tactic was clear; build from the back and start preventing needless goals going in.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did that excellently by spending a combined £130million on Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. As the season has gone on, both have improved endlessly as they adjust and adapt to their new surroundings.
Both played their part against Chelsea on Monday night, too. Wan-Bissaka’s inch-perfect cross allowed Anthony Martial to open the scoring, while Maguire nodded home a Bruno Fernandes corner to secure all three points.
Today, in the build-up to the Red Devils’ game against Club Brugge in Belgium, the Norweigan was full of praise for the 22-year-old United star Wan-Bissaka – whom he hailed as one of the best one-on-one defenders he has ever seen.
“He’s one of the best one-v-one defenders I’ve ever seen, but he used to be a winger when he was younger, so he’s got it in him.” Solskjaer is quoted as saying by the official United Twitter account.
When you look at some of the players Solskjaer donned out alongside while at the Theatre of Dreams, this is high praise indeed. In the modern-day game where most manager’s look for attack-minded full-backs, Wan-Bissaka is a defensive breath of fresh air.
The timing in the tackle, the physicality, the brilliant positional sense. The young Englishman has it all, and if he continues to improve in the final third, this lad could easily become one of the best right-backs in the world.
We’ve seen glimpses of his crossing ability getting better, and as the Baby Faced Assasin says, he did used to be a winger so I guess we should expect some quality from time-to-time.
This must be a massive confidence-booster for Wan-Bissaka though, who continues to go from strength-to-strength.
